Adventures in Crate Digging Introduction

Once upon a time in a place unrecognized by the world, in a land where good music is legend, and where vinyl is deemed unnecessary, lived a special kind of music connoisseur… the Crate Digger.  I know, I know, a little dramatic, but this is the first of many entries for the “Adventures in Crate Digging” and I wanted it to be special…lol.  I know some of you may be wondering, “Who is this guy?”. My name is X:144, a dude that’s privileged enough to be blogging my adventures with the Numark PT-01 Portable Turntable while going record hunting for some rare and most importantly DOPE records. I’m not a DJ per se, my appreciation for vinyl comes from my beat making and music compositions. But for all you credit-mongers, some of my credits include Kool G. Rap, Sol.illaquists of Sound, MF Doom, Mars ill, and more.

I’m one half of Nonsense Records recording artists “X:144 & SPS”.   We’ve been touring for the last year promoting our critically acclaimed debut album “M.E.”, and we’re currently in the beginning stages of our new album - one of the most important stages is crate digging.  Crate digging is an art form, as cliché as it may sound, it’s true.  Especially now with the disposable music of today in a do-it-all-cell-phone culture, we’re conditioned to listen one minute and forget the next.  Hence the talent and work that lies behind mentally cataloging old vinyl from a past era.

Back when I started digging, which was about 15 years ago, a portable turntable was unheard of. Luckily, that isn’t the case today.  I’m pretty excited about going through this process with the Numark PT-01, being that it’s the first portable turntable I’ve owned. Which makes me sound a little prehistoric, but I pick records the old school way…vibes from record cover-art or just a gut feeling.  I suppose now I can save some loot on all those potential “Jimmy Buffet-like records” I bought at garage sales…lol.

So sit back and relax while I brag about the PT-01 and take you along on my process of finding the right vibe for all the projects I’ll be working on.

Peace, -X:144

FYI "Crate Digger Expert", Portables have existed for at least 50 years, in many forms. They are far from unheard of, ROFL. Hey Numark. hire some one with real digging knowledge for this blog, like me.

He says they were unheard of, meaning people didn't use them where he was getting records, apparently. Not that Numark invented the portable...

portable turntables weren't widely available back then as they were now. It wasn't until the 80's that portable turntable became a battery powered device, more or less an a/c powered one. I know I didn't know of one existing back in the early 90's. Plus I know for a fact that this dude is official, don't believe it? listen to his beats.

Yes batery powered portables existed. Try children's record players, lots were made with batteries. They existed in the 70's. Matter of fact there were boxes with record players on them. He might be legit with his beats, but he made himself look like an amatuer. And I been Diggin since the late 80's. 1st record deal in 90....
